Fun Facts
The archaeologists who have examined the park estimate there are over 10,000 sites.
These include: Late Paleo-Indian (8000-6500 B.C.), Archaic (6500 B.C.-1000 A.D.), Late Prehistoric (A.D. 1000-1535), and Historic eras (A.D. 1535-present).
There are 120 caves known at this time in Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
This number will change as exploration continues.
White Sands National Park is home to the largest gypsum dune field in the world.
The gypsum sand forms as a result of rainwater and snowmelt that dissolve the gypsum from nearby mountains and flow into the Tularosa Basin.
