Days 1 - 3 - Travel to Rwanda

Along with a Pleasurebent Tours Tour Escort, depart from Tucson on your flights. We will arrive to Kigali-Rwanda and transfer to our hotel (Mille Collines Hotel or similar).

Day 4 - Volcanoes National Park

We start our day with a drive to Kigali Genocide Memorial Center which honors the memory of more than 1 million Rwandans killed in 1994. After lunch, proceed to Volcanoes National Park. This area is best known as a sanctuary for the region’s rare mountain gorillas, one of the world’s most endangered species. The towering volcanoes that surround provide a dramatic natural setting and a diverse range of ecosystems. We check into the Ingagi Parkview Lodge, where we stay for two nights.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

Day 5 - Gorilla Trekking

We will begin out day with breakfast, fueling up for the incredible day ahead. We will be transferred to the park headquarters and meet with our ranger who will brief us about the code of conduct while with the gorillas. Then, enter the forest in search of the gorillas. Each group is guided by a guide and two scouts who are well trained in emergency situations. The trekking may take 2-4 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas in the jungle and our group speed as well. Meet and stay with the gorillas for a maximum of one hour. This is an experience that few are able to have in their lifetime.

After, walk back to the starting point and be transferred to the lodge for lunch. This evening, relax at the lodge or head out for a cultural encounter with a walking tour to a different site to get an insight of Rwandan way of life. Dinner will be at the lodge tonight.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

Day 6 - Flight to Nairobi

Today, we set off on the next leg of our adventure. Catch a flight to Nairobi-Kenya and transfer to your hotel (New Stanley Hotel by Sarova or similar) for a two night stay.

Meals included: (B)

Day 7 - African Experiences

We begin our day by visiting Elephant Orphanage then proceed to Rothschild Giraffe Sanctuary. In 1979, it was believed there were only 120 animals left when the Center was founded and efforts to save the sub-species began.

In another suburb of Nairobi, we will make a fascinating stop at the house where Karen Blixen lived from 1914 to 1931. Karen Blixen was a Danish author best known for her memoir, “Out of Africa,” which details her life while running a coffee plantation in Kenya. Denys Finch-Hatton’s books are still on the shelves. Lunch at Karen Blixen Cottages Late afternoon drives back to hotel for overnight.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

Day 8 - Lake Nakuru National Park

After breakfast we will drive to lake Nakuru National Park which is a shallow alkaline lake on the bed of the Great Rift Valley; and home to thousands of greater and lesser flamingos and various water birds. The rich acacia savannah shelters numerous bird species, elands, leopards, lions, buffaloes and other plain game. The park also has a well-guarded number of rhinos, both the black and the rare white rhino. Arrive in time for lunch then followed by afternoon game drive. Tonight, we stay at Sarova Lions Hill Lodge.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

Day 9 - Masai Mara National Reserve

We dive deeper into the game of Kenya. Start off the morning with a game walk, enjoy breakfast, and then transfer to Masai Mara National Reserve. Here, we will embark on a game drive. The Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is one of Africa’s most famous wildlife conservation areas, renowned for its diverse and abundant wildlife. Some of the animals you can expect to see in the Maasai Mara include lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinoceros. We may also see cheetahs, zebras, wildebeests, hippos, and an array of birdlife.

We will head back for lunch and check in at Mara West Camp for a 2 night stay.

Meals included: (B, L, D)

Days 10 & 11 - Game Drives

We have two full days of game drives. We have planned ample time for you to spot the most wildlife as possible to ensure you have the full experience.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Tucson International Airport. If you have a Delta Airlines frequent flyer number, or a Global Entry or TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Tucson, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your passport to show at the airport. Please ensure that you are aware and have the proper documentation to enter all of the countries that we will be visiting on the tour. Check with your physician or call Passport Health at 505-881-8785 for complete information about any vaccinations and health concerns.

BAGGAGE

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carry-on baggage and contents due to enhanced security measures. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. Space on the Land Cruisers for carry-ons will be limited; plan on a small purse or hand-held bag.

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On our scheduled airline for this tour, you will be assessed a fee for checked baggage, upon arrival by the airlines.

ITINERARY

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

The times listed on the itinerary are all approximate. We cannot be held responsible for schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances with the weather, transportation agents, highway conditions, hotels or contracting agents.

ACTIVITY LEVEL 5

Level 5: Energetic

Expectations: Tours include well-paced walking tours with intermittent breaks. Could be up to 4-5 hours walking each day. Likely to feature many attributes of our active level, this is very much an on-the-go tour with a complete itinerary involving a full, normally daily program of travel, sightseeing or events. We would consider this tour faster paced and free time at leisure will be more limited, in some cases just to evenings. Programs are at a very active pace, with long travel days and a demanding daily schedule of physical activities.

Appropriate for: Travelers who are physically fit, expect a vigorous pace, enjoy participating in four to five hours of physical activity per day and enjoy challenging themselves physically.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

The traditional end-of-tour gratuity to your tour director is included on this tour. All hotel porterage and airport skycap (when available) fees are included. We also include the gratuities for the coach/livery drivers. Hotel housekeeping tips are not included.

LIVERY

For your convenience, we have a (round-tour) door-to-door pickup service with each multi-day tour. (This service is not available to all clients depending on your location.) Approximately 2 to 3 days prior to the departure date you will receive a call from our office and we will tell you your assigned pickup time. (These times can vary up to 15 minutes depending on traffic.)

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

There is no smoking in the lodges and tents. A "reconditioning fee" of $300 or more that is levied upon a guest that smokes in a non-smoking room. If this occurs during our tour you will be responsible for paying this fee to the hotel prior to check-out.

TRAVEL REQUESTS

We pay close attention to your requests but please realize that these are merely requests and cannot be guaranteed.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING/MISC. SUGGESTIONS

In September, Rwanda typically experiences dry and warm weather, with daytime temperatures around 25°C (77°F) and cooler nights, possibly down to 15°C (59°F). This month falls within one of Rwanda's dry seasons, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

In Kenya, September is part of the dry season, characterized by warm and relatively dry weather, making it an excellent time for wildlife viewing and safaris. Daytime temperatures can vary but are generally comfortable, ranging from the mid-20s to low 30s Celsius (mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit), depending on the region. Coastal areas tend to be warmer and more humid, while the highlands, including areas like Nairobi, are cooler, especially in the evenings and early mornings.

It's best to dress in layers. Hats are encouraged as we will be spending lots of time outdoors. Travelers to both countries are advised to take preventive measures, which may include the use of mosquito repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing and pants, and consulting your physician. Wear comfortable shoes for walking long distances including hiking shoes for our gorilla trekking.
